Today, on Masuo’s National Gourmet Journey, I’m thrilled to introduce “Kinjiro Cafe” in Odawara, Kanagawa Prefecture. This cafe is inspired by a famous historical figure in Japan, Kinjiro Ninomiya. Kinjiro Ninomiya, who lived in the late Edo period, is respected as a thinker who made great contributions to rural revival and economic reform. His values of diligence and honesty are highly regarded in Japan and continue to impact people even today.

Kinjiro Cafe at Hotoku Ninomiya Shrine in Odawara

“Kinjiro Cafe” is located within the grounds of Hotoku Ninomiya Shrine, which is dedicated to Kinjiro Ninomiya and is about a 10-minute walk from Odawara Station. This shrine was established in Kinjiro’s hometown of Odawara, where the cafe was created to pass on his teachings and legacy to modern visitors. The cafe has a Japanese-modern interior and is perfect for a peaceful, relaxing time, thanks to the serene atmosphere of the shrine.

Note: Hours are from 10:00 to 16:30, so it’s ideal for a lunch break or a relaxed cafe stop during sightseeing.

Kinjiro Cafe’s Unique Menu

Inspired by Kinjiro’s teachings on “thrift and health,” Kinjiro Cafe offers a range of unique items. One recommendation is Go-jiru, a traditional soybean-based miso soup that Kinjiro himself is said to have enjoyed. Nutritious and gentle on the body, this soup is both delicious and healthy.
