三嶋大社の名物土産「福太郎」

Hello! Today, we’re visiting a popular sightseeing spot in Mishima City, Shizuoka Prefecture—Mishima Taisha Shrine. Here, we’ll explore Mishima Taisha and taste a famous local treat, the “Fukutaro” rice cake!

About Mishima Taisha Shrine

Mishima Taisha is a Shinto shrine in Mishima City, only a 10-minute walk from JR Mishima Station. It has a long history dating back to the Nara period (710 – 794) and is known for its connection with the famous samurai Minamoto no Yoritomo, who prayed here for victory in battle. The shrine is loved by locals and visitors alike for its serene atmosphere and beautiful, towering sacred trees.

Tasting Fukutaro, the Lucky Rice Cake

After visiting Mishima Taisha, don’t miss the “Fukutaro Honpo” shop located within the shrine grounds. Here you can try Fukutaro, a well-known souvenir and a favorite treat! Fukutaro is a soft rice cake made with 100% yomogi (Japanese mugwort) and filled with a smooth, mildly sweet red bean paste. You can also enjoy it with green tea, a perfect treat during your travel break!

In the shop, there’s a space where you can enjoy the “Fukutaro & Tea Set” (2 rice cakes) for just 250 yen. Take a rest, enjoy the taste, and feel refreshed!

The Fukutaro Design

The rice cake’s unique shape and packaging design reflect Fukutaro’s face, symbolizing good luck! You can even bring this adorable souvenir home. Currently, a box of 12 is sold for 1,200 yen, with a shelf life of 4 days, so enjoy it soon!

Visiting the Shrine

After savoring Fukutaro, take some time to explore the Mishima Taisha grounds.

The shrine offers fortunes, or omikuji, to test your luck. My omikuji was a “great blessing!” The calming experience left me feeling relaxed and refreshed.

In Summary

Mishima Taisha Shrine in Mishima City, Shizuoka Prefecture, offers a peaceful retreat and delicious treats like Fukutaro. When visiting Mishima, we highly recommend enjoying this beautiful shrine and its tasty traditional sweets!
