【Kyoto】Issen Yoshoku Review – Savor Showa‑Era Flavor in Gion!

  • #gourmet
  • #KYOTO

Hello! This is Masuo.

Today, I visited Issen Yoshoku in Gion, Kyoto—a famous spot to enjoy a nostalgic Showa-era meal called issen yoshoku.

At the heart of Gion, stepping into the restaurant felt like stepping back in time. With its retro Showa decor and a hearty portion of issen yoshoku, this place offered a unique and entertaining dining experience.

Weekday Lunch Visit – Crowds & Atmosphere

I arrived on a Friday at noon.
The place wasn’t crowded, and I could enter right away—unusual for tourist-heavy Gion.
I spotted many foreign tourists, which made sense: the décor, reminiscent of an old candy shop, would feel very “Japanese” to international visitors.

Immersive Showa‑Era Showpiece Ambiance

The moment you walk in, you’re transported to a Showa-era retro world.

The walls are adorned with old postcards, vintage toys, and Astro Boy memorabilia.
Mannequins sit among diners, silently blending in.

Showa-style original songs play continuously—a truly immersive and charming atmosphere unique to Issen Yoshoku.

The Star of the Show – Issen Yoshoku (¥850)

This restaurant focuses entirely on its signature dish: issen yoshoku (¥850).

Although reminiscent of okonomiyaki, it’s uniquely topped with a mix of:

  • spring onion
  • egg
  • sakura‑ebi (tiny shrimp)
  • bonito flakes
  • pickled ginger
  • domestic Wagyu beef
  • seasoned konnyaku
  • chikuwa (fish cake)
  • crunchy tempura bits
  • wheat flour batter
  • savory sauce
  • Asakusa nori (seaweed)

Cooked on a hot plate, it’s fluffy and flavorful. The sweet‑savory sauce perfectly complements the rich mix of ingredients—almost like a savory crepe fused with okonomiyaki.
