On my recent trip to Nara, I visited the famous Kasuga Taisha Shrine and tried the unique “Deer Fortune” (Shika Mikuji). This shrine is not only known for its sacred deer that freely roam the grounds but also for its stunning traditional architecture and serene surroundings.

Kasuga Taisha is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Nara and a great place to experience Japan’s cultural heritage.

About Kasuga Taisha Shrine

Kasuga Taisha Shrine is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Nara. Located within Nara Park, the shrine is surrounded by famous landmarks such as Todai-ji Temple and Kofuku-ji Temple. It’s an excellent spot for sightseeing and experiencing Japanese tradition and history.

Experience the Charming Deer Fortune
One of the highlights of visiting Kasuga Taisha is trying the adorable “Deer Fortune.” These unique wooden deer figurines come with a fortune slip and are a perfect souvenir from your trip.


Types of Deer Fortune
- White Deer Fortune (600 yen): Painted white for an elegant look. It makes a great keepsake or decoration.
- Natural Deer Fortune (600 yen): A natural wooden design with a warm and rustic feel.
I chose the Natural Deer Fortune and was thrilled to get “Great Luck” (Daikichi)! Each fortune includes insights into various aspects of life, such as health, work, relationships, and travel.
Fortune Results Include
- Great Luck (Daikichi): Excellent fortune with everything going well.
- Good Luck (Chukichi): Favorable results with some effort required.
- Small Luck (Shokichi): Moderate fortune; patience and effort bring rewards.
- Luck (Kichi): Normal fortune; steady progress is key.
- Slight Luck (Suekichi): Gradual improvements ahead; move cautiously.
- Bad Luck (Kyo): Challenges may arise, but perseverance will lead to success.

The main shrine is designated as a National Treasure and showcases traditional Japanese architecture. Its sacred atmosphere offers a sense of peace and purity.
2. Interaction with Deer
The deer wandering around the grounds are considered messengers of the gods. Feeding them with special “deer crackers” is a fun and memorable experience.
3. Omamori Charms and Ema Plaques
The shrine offers a variety of charms and plaques featuring deer motifs. Popular options include charms for academic success, safe travels, and romantic relationships.
