両足院のお守り体験(結守)

Hello, it’s Masuo.
In Gion, Kyoto, I tried the hand-made omamori workshop at Ryosokuin (a sub-temple of Kennin-ji). I first spotted the adorable designs on Instagram and went right away. Because you finish the amulet with your own hands, the piece really carries your thoughts and wishes.

What is the Yui-Mamori?

Ryosokuin sits inside the Kennin-ji temple grounds, about a 7-minute walk from Keihan Gion-Shijo Station. The Yui-Mamori experience lets you choose a pouch design and hand-finish your omamori while quietly focusing on your wish. The variety of patterns is large enough that choosing is part of the fun.

  • Fee: about ¥3,000
  • Booking: No reservation required (walk-in). On-site guidance and times may vary by day.

How it works (simple steps)

  1. Check in at the office inside Ryosokuin (in the Kennin-ji precincts).
  2. Choose your pouch from many cute designs (lace, embroidery, and more).
  1. Compose your wish in a calm moment, write it down, add the wooden tablet and incense powder, then fold and place it into the pouch.
  1. Tie and finish. Your hand-made omamori is ready—unique to you, with real emotional attachment.

Why it’s special

  • Plenty of designs: photo-friendly yet good for daily use.
  • Deeply personal: because you finish it yourself, it feels like “your” omamori.
  • Peaceful atmosphere: a quiet space to gather your thoughts.

Practical info for visitors

  • Location: Ryosokuin (Kennin-ji sub-temple), Gion area, Kyoto.
  • Access:
    • Keihan Gion-Shijo Station: ~7 min on foot
    • Hankyu Kyoto-Kawaramachi Station: ~10–12 min on foot
  • Typical reception hours: around 9:30–16:00 (may change; check posted info on the day).
  • Language: Staff availability in English can vary. Simple phrases or a translation app help.
  • Etiquette: Keep voices low, dress modestly, and follow on-site instructions; ask about any photo restrictions.
  • Payment: Temples often prefer cash; carry some just in case.
  • Timing tips: Weekday mornings are usually quieter; weekends and holidays can be busier.

Summary

If you’re looking for something uniquely Kyoto, making a Yui-Mamori at Ryosokuin blends craft, quiet reflection, and design you’ll actually want to carry. It’s a meaningful souvenir and a gentle moment during your Gion walk.
