Hello! This is Masuo!

I visited Oga Peninsula in Akita Prefecture for a one-day adventure filled with Namahage culture, delicious local food, and breathtaking scenery. If you’re looking for an exciting one-day itinerary, here’s a complete guide to experiencing the best of Oga!

10:00 Arriving in Akita & Renting a Car

I arrived at Akita Station at 10:00 AM, where I was greeted by Namahage decorations everywhere! It really made me feel like I had arrived in Akita.

While you can take a train to Oga, I highly recommend renting a car for easier access to attractions. The drive from Akita Station to Oga Peninsula takes about 1 to 1.5 hours.

12:00 Lunch at Minokou – Ishiyaki Hot Stone Cooking

I visited Minokou (美野幸) in Oga’s Kunibuchi district to try their famous Ishiyaki hot stone cooking. This traditional Oga dish involves pouring hot stones into a wooden barrel filled with fresh seafood, instantly boiling the broth.

Watching the bubbling broth was so exciting, and the natural flavors of the sea bream made the soup incredibly rich. A must-try dish when visiting Oga!

Recommended time: About 1 hour

13:00 Namahage Mask Crafting at Gofu

After lunch, I went to Gofu, located in Oga Onsen Village, for a Namahage mask-making experience.

Crafting my own Namahage mask was a fun and unique activity, perfect for creating lasting memories. The staff provided detailed instructions, making it easy even for beginners.

Recommended time: 30 minutes

14:00 Exploring the Namahage Museum

Next, I headed to the Namahage Museum, where I learned about the fascinating history and traditions of Namahage.

The museum features dozens of Namahage masks from different regions, each with a unique design. One of the highlights was trying on a Namahage costume and taking pictures!

Recommended time: 30 minutes

14:30 Namahage Experience at Shinzan Folklore Museum

Located next to the museum, the Shinzan Folklore Museum offers a realistic reenactment of the Namahage ritual, held every New Year’s Eve in Oga.

The performance was so intense and immersive—it felt like stepping into an ancient legend. Even some kids in the audience were scared! This is an absolute must-see in Oga.

Recommended time: 30 minutes

15:00 Visiting Shinzan Shrine

Just a short walk from the folklore museum, Shinzan Shrine is surrounded by a serene forest, creating a mystical atmosphere.

The shrine sells Namahage-themed lucky charms, which make for a great souvenir!

Recommended time: 15 minutes

16:00 Watching the Sunset at Unosaki Coast

Unosaki Coast is one of Japan’s “100 Best Sunset Spots”, offering a breathtaking view of the sea reflecting the sky.

Unfortunately, it was cloudy when I visited, but on clear days, the view is absolutely stunning.

Recommended time: 10 minutes

16:20 Shopping at Michi-no-Eki Ogaare

After the coastline, I stopped by Michi-no-Eki Ogaare, a roadside station selling local specialties like fresh seafood, vegetables, and Namahage souvenirs.

They even sell Baba Hera Ice Cream, a famous Akita street dessert!

Recommended time: 10-20 minutes

17:00 Dinner at Izakaya Shu

For dinner, I went to Izakaya Shu, a well-loved local spot known for its fresh seafood and Akita sake.

Since I was driving, I couldn’t drink, but I enjoyed:

  • Sashimi Set Meal (2,600 yen)
  • Shottsuru Ramen (900 yen)

The Shottsuru Ramen, made with fermented fish sauce, was a surprising highlight—definitely one of my top local ramen experiences!

Recommended time: 1-2 hours

20:00 Namahage Taiko Drum Show at Gofu

I ended the day back at Gofu for the Namahage Taiko Drum Show.

The powerful drumming and Namahage performance were absolutely mesmerizing. I almost skipped it because of the late start, but I’m so glad I went. The 30-minute show felt way too short—I wanted more!

Recommended time: 30 minutes

Final Thoughts

That wraps up my One-Day Oga Adventure!

This itinerary covers food, culture, shopping, and sightseeing, making it a perfect way to experience Oga Peninsula.

I missed a few spots like Godzilla Rock and Oga Aquarium, so I’ll definitely be coming back! If you’re visiting Akita, Oga is a must-see destination.
