Explore Hiroshima’s Orizuru Tower: Stunning Views & Peaceful Reflections

おりづるタワー

Hello! It’s Masuo here!

This time, I visited Orizuru Tower, a symbolic landmark in Hiroshima. Located right next to the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, this tower is a special place where you can enjoy stunning views of the city and experience the significance of Hiroshima’s message of peace.

As someone originally from Hiroshima, this was actually my first visit to Orizuru Tower, as it was built after I had moved to Tokyo. I enjoyed it so much, and I’m excited to share my experience with you!

What is Orizuru Tower?

Orizuru Tower is a cultural and sightseeing facility located next to the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park and Atomic Bomb Dome. The name “Orizuru” means “folded crane,” and the tower was inspired by the paper cranes (orizuru) folded around the world as symbols of peace. Inside, you can enjoy panoramic city views, hands-on activities, and exhibitions dedicated to promoting peace.

On the ground floor, you’ll find a gift shop with Hiroshima-themed souvenirs and a café that serves Hiroshima specialties, including Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki. It’s a great place to take a break while exploring the Peace Park area.

Access

Orizuru Tower is conveniently located just a 3-minute walk from Genbaku Dome-mae (Atomic Bomb Dome) Station on the Hiroshima Electric Railway (tram line). From Hiroshima Station, you can reach Orizuru Tower in about 15 minutes by tram. Public transportation in Hiroshima is easy to use, and the tram offers a scenic route through the city center.

Orizuru Tower Admission Fees

Admission fees for Orizuru Tower are as follows:

  • Adults: 2,200 yen
  • Middle and High School Students: 1,400 yen
  • Elementary School Students: 900 yen
  • Preschool Children: 600 yen

The Observation Deck “Hiroshima no Oka” – A Scenic View of Hiroshima

The main highlight of Orizuru Tower is the Hiroshima no Oka (Hiroshima Hill) observation deck on the rooftop. From here, you can enjoy sweeping 360-degree views of Hiroshima City, including iconic sights like the Atomic Bomb Dome, Hiroshima Castle, and even the distant Seto Inland Sea on a clear day.

As a Hiroshima native, I found the view especially moving. Seeing the Atomic Bomb Dome from above was a powerful experience, reminding me of Hiroshima’s journey from devastation to peace. Whether you’re from Hiroshima or visiting for the first time, the view from here is unforgettable.

Orizuru Wall – Folding and Placing Your Own Crane of Peace

A unique part of the experience at Orizuru Tower is the Orizuru Wall. Visitors are invited to fold an orizuru (paper crane) and add it to the wall as a personal wish for peace. For many, folding a crane is a meaningful activity that connects them to Hiroshima’s message of hope and resilience.

Orizuru Tower even offers origami paper with special designs to mark milestones like the recent celebration of 1 million cranes! And don’t worry if you don’t know how to fold a crane — instructions are provided so anyone can participate.

Adding your crane to the Orizuru Wall involves stepping into a narrow passage with a glass floor, where you can view all the accumulated cranes. It’s an awe-inspiring sight and a collective tribute to peace and hope.

The Spiral Slide “Kurukuru Cool” – A Fun Descent for All Ages

For an extra bit of fun, Orizuru Tower features a unique spiral slide called Kurukuru Cool, which starts from the 12th floor and takes you down 70 meters to the ground! Adults and children alike can enjoy this slide, and protective gear is provided if needed. While it’s a bit thrilling at first, the slide is a memorable way to end your visit.

Hiroshima Souvenirs – Recommendations from Masuo

After enjoying the tower, don’t forget to stop by the gift shop on the first floor, which has a wide selection of Hiroshima-themed souvenirs. Here are some items I found interesting:

  • Buchi E Tea – A charming tea brand featuring Hiroshima’s local dialect word “buchi” and the famous Miyajima deer. The cute packaging makes it a great gift!
  • Orizuru Accessories – Handmade accessories inspired by the folded crane, including earrings, necklaces, and keychains. These are perfect as mementos of your visit to Hiroshima.
  • “Hiroshima Jaken” T-Shirt – Another souvenir inspired by Hiroshima dialect! “Jaken” is a popular local phrase, and this T-shirt is simple and stylish.
  • Postcards and Stickers – Unique designs featuring Hiroshima landmarks, like Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki, which differs from Osaka-style. These items are great reminders of your trip to Hiroshima.

Summary

Orizuru Tower is more than just an observation tower; it’s a place that connects people to Hiroshima’s history, beauty, and peace message. As someone from Hiroshima, I thoroughly enjoyed my visit and would highly recommend it to anyone exploring the Peace Memorial Park and Atomic Bomb Dome. Orizuru Tower is an ideal spot for taking in the views, reflecting on Hiroshima’s past, and appreciating its present.

Whether you’re a Hiroshima native or a first-time visitor, Orizuru Tower offers an inspiring and memorable experience in the heart of Hiroshima.
